New North Concourse At Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

Part of a $1billion Terminal B/C Redevelopment Program, the New North Concourse project enhances the passenger experience at DCA by providing 14 gates that replaced the existing ground loading operations.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) selected PGAL as part of the AIR Alliance Joint-Venture Architectural/Engineering team for design and construction documentation services for this $1 billion capital improvement program at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The Authority’s program, also known as “Project Journey”, is intended to address decreasing level of service at the existing terminal facilities due to overcrowding caused by record passenger growth in recent years. To enhance the overall level of service, the primary component of the program includes the construction of the New North Concourse facility that replaces the existing ground-loaded aircraft hardstand operation.

The new 14-gate 230,000 SF Concourse establishes a new environment for passengers that focuses on offering services and amenities for the traveler that are consistent with next-generation concourses. Gate areas are designed with diversified seating types to create a more inviting and lounge-like atmosphere with dedicated zones offering powered work surface counters for laptop and reading convenience. Concessions spaces are integrated into the gate areas offering passengers immediate access to a broad range of retail, food and beverage options within view of their boarding gate. The architecture emphasizes an open and light filled interior that provides passengers full view to all amenities and reinforces intuitive wayfinding to all gates. Fully glazed walls in the gate areas afford passengers direct views to the Nation’s Capital. In order to provide a consistent passenger experience as part of the Airport’s “Project Journey” enhancement program, this developed concept for the new concourse is planned to be implemented throughout the existing Terminal B/C concourses.
