City of Allen Fire Station No. 5
Allen, TX
This 10,500-square-foot, three-bay station supports a crew of eight firefighters and incorporates all core elements of a modern substation while advancing the City of Allen’s goals for sustainability, education, and civic engagement.

Certified LEED Platinum, the facility functions as both an active fire station and an educational prototype. Dedicated spaces for tours, demonstrations, and seminars introduce staff and the public to sustainable building systems, positioning the station as a citywide model for high-performance civic design.
A defining feature is the inverted butterfly roof, which draws daylight into public and semi-private areas through continuous clerestory windows. The roof also captures rainwater for irrigation and equipment washing. Additional sustainable strategies include a geothermal HVAC system, automated daylight harvesting, a 30,000-gallon rainwater storage tank, and interior water systems that reduce potable water use by 46 percent.
