Terminal 1 Modernization Program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
Los Angeles, CA
As part of Los Angeles International Airport’s capital improvement program, the redesign of Terminal 1 enhances the passenger experience and strengthens Southwest Airlines’ operations within a 346,000-square-foot facility.

To reduce roadway congestion and improve curbside flow, terminal functions were reconfigured with the entrance, ticketing counters, and Skycap operations relocated from the east to the west end. The arrivals and departures levels now feature a revitalized passenger lobby with self-check-in and bag tag kiosks, a 12-lane security screening checkpoint, and a high-speed in-line baggage handling system that improves throughput and simplifies navigation.
Inside the secure area, the expanded concourse introduces twelve gates with enlarged hold rooms, daylight-filled interiors, and upgraded finishes. The concessions program nearly doubled, adding 25,000 square feet of new retail and dining options. Additional improvements include enhanced signage, vertical circulation upgrades, and expanded airside views that elevate the overall passenger environment.
Designed for Southwest’s growing Boeing 737 fleet, the modernization also delivered new boarding bridges, a hydrant fueling system, electric ground service equipment chargers, and upgraded apron pavement. A carefully phased construction strategy ensured uninterrupted airport operations throughout the multi-year program.
