Space Center Houston Independence Plaza

Independence Plaza offers a one-of-a-kind experience where visitors can explore both a high-fidelity replica of the Space Shuttle Independence and the original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft. It remains the only exhibit that allows the public to enter both vehicles, providing an immersive look into the Space Shuttle Program.
A four-level, 5,500-square-foot steel tower provides access through elevators and a wide stairway to the shuttle’s flight deck, mid-deck, and the interior of the 747-carrier aircraft. Open-air vestibules create gathering spaces as guests prepare to board.
Inside, interactive exhibits trace the history and impact of the Shuttle Program, highlighting problem-solving, STEM career paths, and technological innovation. Supporting structures, including a concrete plaza and pedestals, ensure the stability and long-term maintenance of the aircraft.
