SH 64 Super 2 Passing Lane Widening

The existing two-lane highway was upgraded to a Super 2 configuration to provide critical passing lanes that addressed the district’s need to improve traffic flow and safety, particularly for local residents impacted by increased truck traffic traveling to and from Tyler and Dallas.

The project incorporated significant safety improvements, including metal beam guard fence, upgraded bridge rail, culvert extensions and safety end treatments.

PGAL collaborated closely with the Tyler District to determine optimal locations for passing lanes based on traffic patterns and safety considerations.  Key safety enhancements were also made to the pavement, including corrections to cross slope, superelevation adjustments, and sag profile modifications to ensure compliance with current 3R criteria and prevent overtopping.

Close coordination with the city also was also critical in the design the culvert extensions and ditch backslopes to avoid costly relocations of their existing water lines.
