A central challenge was retaining as much of the original fabric as possible while introducing flexible spaces for programming, museum displays, and classrooms. The building’s internal corridor was reinterpreted as a “Main Street,” an organizing spine that connects multipurpose rooms and galleries. Full-height openings and window niches highlight original architectural features and guide visitors through the building.

Flood control requirements and parking expansion were addressed despite site constraints. Severely deteriorated elements such as the entry portico and perimeter windows were reconstructed to match their historic appearance while meeting modern performance standards.
