Originally established in 1974 as The Wharf, the site holds historical significance as the community’s first shopping center.

Led by Montgomery County and The Howard Hughes Corporation, the redevelopment preserves the area’s legacy while addressing the evolving needs of local residents. The library’s design reflects The Woodlands’ biophilic values, incorporating natural materials, a sculptural tree bookshelf, a Lake Woodlands mural, and fritted glass panels that mimic sunlight filtering through trees. The children’s area features artistic pine tree elements and interactive digital installations.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the library offers a range of modern amenities designed to support learning, creativity, and community engagement. Patrons have access to study pods for individual work, a podcasting room equipped for audio production, a 3D printing lab for innovative projects, and a tiered classroom suitable for various educational programs. Flexible meeting spaces are available to accommodate community gatherings and events, reinforcing the library’s role as a central hub for social interaction.
