The expansion of Holocaust Museum Houston transformed the institution into one of the largest Holocaust museums in the country, more than doubling its size to 57,000 square feet. A new three-story structure replaced the original east wing, significantly enhancing the museum’s capacity to educate, preserve, and engage.

The expanded facility includes a welcome center, four permanent galleries, two changing exhibition spaces, classrooms, a research library, administrative offices, a café, a 200-seat indoor theater, and a 175-seat outdoor amphitheater. A roof opening atop the existing cylindrical volume introduces daylight during the day and emits a soft glow at night, establishing the museum as a visual and symbolic beacon.

Notable exhibits include a World War II-era railcar and a Danish rescue boat, both housed indoors to ensure long-term preservation. The Moral Choices Hall and Butterfly Loft serve as the emotional core of the building, featuring a suspended installation of 1,500 acrylic butterflies, each representing 1,000 children lost in the Holocaust.

Our museum is not a passive learning experience. We feel that it is so important that our visitors leave feeling emboldened, that they can take action and make a difference in our world. That’s really what our mission is.
