PGAL is helping improve mobility at one of Fort Bend County’s key intersections with a new grade separation that separates US 90A through traffic from turning movements at State Highway 99 (SH 99).

As prime engineering consultant, PGAL designed the US 90A main lanes, frontage roads, and ramps, along with bridges, retaining walls, sound walls, traffic signals, and traffic control improvements. The design also incorporates significant storm sewer infrastructure and in-line detention to address drainage requirements for the corridor.

The project required careful planning to accommodate both current needs and future transportation improvements. PGAL developed the design to allow for a future multilevel interchange with direct connectors while addressing the complexities of depressed roadways, including drainage studies, a pump station, and drilled-shaft retaining walls.

Coordination was equally critical. The team developed solutions to avoid and accommodate significant utility conflicts while working within strict construction constraints adjacent to Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) right-of-way. PGAL also led railroad coordination and agreement efforts associated with the improvements.

The resulting design creates six new US 90A main lanes on a grade-separated crossing, allowing traffic to bypass the signalized SH 99 intersection while maintaining ramp connections to the highway. The improvements are designed to increase mobility and reduce congestion along this growing Fort Bend County corridor.
