City of San Marcos Library Renovation + Expansion

A full renovation and expansion doubled its size, added new program space, and transformed the building into a future-ready civic hub.

The design preserves the original curvilinear form while introducing a new public plaza and shaded entry. Removing surface parking near the entrance created a more pedestrian-friendly arrival experience with integrated seating and a planted screen wall for added privacy.

A vaulted, daylit central lobby connects the original structure to the new addition and supports public gatherings. The expanded layout includes multipurpose meeting rooms, tech instruction areas, maker spaces, teen and study rooms, a quiet reading lounge, and a vibrant children’s wing with interactive features and integrated reading zones.

Throughout the building, clerestory windows and seating alcoves at the perimeter enhance daylight and create intimate places to read, study, and connect.
