Bethel Park in Houston’s Fourth Ward is a tribute to community heritage and resilience. Located on the former site of Bethel Baptist Church, which was founded in the 1890s by freed slaves, the park honors a congregation that served as a spiritual and cultural anchor for the Freedmen’s Town neighborhood. After a 2005 fire, only the church’s concrete floor, masonry walls, and support columns remained.

open air church structure

The 0.5-acre site was transformed into an open-air park that preserves the church’s historic footprint while creating a contemplative public space. Reinforced walls and open web trusses provide stability without enclosing the structure, maintaining views of the sky and a reflective atmosphere.

Interpretive panels and seating elements echo the form of traditional pews, sharing the church’s story and its role in the community. Restored window openings bring in natural light, while decorative fencing and native plantings shape a welcoming, peaceful setting.
