City of Dallas Fretz Park Library
Dallas, TX
The renovation of Fretz Park Library preserves the building’s original character while enhancing functionality, accessibility, and user experience.

The project revitalizes a long-standing community institution in North Dallas.
Originally designed in 1976 by the Pierce Lacey Partnership, the library is recognized for its architectural identity and its connection to the adjacent park and recreation center. The City of Dallas selected PGAL to lead a comprehensive renovation and expansion that respects the original design while upgrading building systems, infrastructure, and programming.
Approximately 75 percent of the existing structure was retained, with new materials and additions introduced to improve performance and flexibility. Key enhancements include a black box theater with professional lighting, a sound system, flexible staging, and seating for 80 patrons. The space also features a small dressing area and support room. Additional upgrades include a redesigned landscape, HVAC improvements, building envelope repairs, and accessibility enhancements throughout the facility.
