City of Athens Cain Center
Athens, TX
The renovation of the 49,000-square-foot Cain Center revitalized a recreation and aquatics facility, enhancing its role as a community hub while preserving its midcentury character. Original elements such as wood ceilings, glulam beams, and masonry walls were cleaned and refinished, while refurbished clerestory windows restore abundant natural light throughout the interior.
Upgrades introduced a 9,000-square-foot event space, commercial kitchen, fitness center, racquetball and basketball courts, and administrative offices for the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department. The aquatics area was modernized with competitive swim lanes, a children’s play zone, a therapy/workout area, renovated locker rooms, and a snack bar.
To improve comfort and reflect the building’s midcentury aesthetic, the project added noise-reduction panels, colorful furnishings, and retained details such as terra cotta tile patterns. The result is a vibrant, multi-use facility that balances restoration with modernization to meet contemporary community needs.
