Austin Pets Alive! Central Campus
Austin, TX
Austin Pets Alive! (APA) currently operates from the City of Austin’s former municipal animal shelter, a site that has seen ongoing adaptations to meet the evolving needs of the organization. As the existing facilities age and operational challenges mount, APA and the City are exploring a transformative new campus that will enhance both capacity and care.

In collaboration with Animal Arts, PGAL developed a phased demolition and construction strategy that allows for uninterrupted services throughout the buildout. The proposed 25,000-square-foot campus is designed around the wellbeing of animals, volunteers, and visitors, with flexible spaces and purpose-built structures that reflect APA’s mission-driven work.
The new 13-building campus includes a fully equipped veterinary clinic, a dedicated training center for volunteers, a separate feline medical facility, and three kennel villages that offer indoor/outdoor mobility and behavioral enrichment for dogs. To support animals requiring quieter environments, the plan introduces eight standalone “tiny dog-house” shelters, ideal for rehabilitation and individualized care. A central visitor center anchors the campus, offering outdoor event space and dedicated areas for adoption introductions.
APA and the City of Austin remain in active discussions to jointly develop the campus, creating a lasting home for progressive animal welfare in Central Texas.
