University of Houston-Downtown Celebrates Opening of Gator Expansion Welcome Center
The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) celebrated a major milestone in its Gator Expansion project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 7, 2026. The event brought together the campus community and project partners to celebrate the opening of the newly expanded Welcome Center and the university’s continued investment in its students and campus.
Held at the Girard Street Building, the celebration marked the official completion of Phase II of the Gator Expansion initiative. The ceremony recognized the collaboration and shared vision that brought the project to life, welcoming students and visitors into a new space designed to make navigating university resources easier than ever.
Located on the newly constructed fourth floor of the Girard Street Building, the Welcome Center brings essential student services together under one roof, including Admissions, Enrollment Management, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, the Registrar’s Office, Veteran Services, and Parking and Transportation. Comfortable study areas, informal gathering spaces, and contemporary interiors filled with natural light create an inviting environment for students and visitors alike.
The opening represents another important step in UHD’s multi-phase Gator Expansion initiative, which aims to modernize campus facilities, improve accessibility, and strengthen connections across campus. With Phase II complete, additional improvements are underway, including renovations to the One Main Building that will make student health, counseling, career services, and other resources more accessible.
“With our newly enhanced Welcome Center, we are creating a front door to opportunity,” said UHD Interim President Deborah E. Bordelon, Ph.D. “The new center provides a central point of connection, ensuring every student feels welcomed, supported, and empowered from their first interaction with UHD through the moment they cross the stage on graduation day.”
As architect and interior designer for the project, PGAL worked closely with the University of Houston System and Bartlett Cocke General Contractors to bring the Welcome Center to life. The completed expansion reflects a shared commitment to creating functional, welcoming spaces that support UHD’s evolving needs and long-term vision for the campus.
The ribbon-cutting celebration recognized the many individuals and organizations whose collaboration made this milestone possible. With the Welcome Center now open and serving students, UHD takes another important step toward creating a more connected and accessible campus experience.
PGAL was proud to join the University of Houston-Downtown in celebrating this milestone and looks forward to seeing the new spaces serve students, faculty, and staff for years to come.
