Terminal 4 Modernization Project at LAX Reaches Major Topping Out Milestone

The Terminal 4 Modernization Project at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has reached a major construction milestone with the placement of the final structural beam on the new terminal frame, marking the completion of substantial structural construction for the $1.6 billion project.

The topping out ceremony celebrated the achievement with signatures from construction crews and project team members on the final beam before it was placed atop the structure.

PGAL is leading the design for the Terminal 4 Modernization Project, developed in partnership with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and American Airlines. The project is part of a broader modernization effort across Terminals 4 and 5 aimed at creating a more efficient, connected, and elevated passenger experience at LAX.

The redevelopment includes a new unified departures hall and a new south concourse for Terminal 4, along with expanded hold rooms, upgraded concessions, enhanced restroom facilities, and a new bus gate serving both domestic and international passengers. Construction is being completed in carefully phased operations to allow the terminal to remain active throughout the process.

“This milestone reflects the tremendous collaboration and dedication of the entire project team,” says PGAL Principal Diana Payne. “The new Terminal 4 will transform the passenger experience while supporting the continued evolution of one of the world’s busiest airports.”

With the primary structural framework now complete, crews will shift focus to supporting infrastructure, interior buildout, exterior systems, and passenger amenities as the project advances toward anticipated completion in 2027.
