PGAL Designs for a Cause at IIDA Furniture Flip 2026
The Houston design community came together for the 2026 IIDA Houston City Center Furniture Flip, where creativity, craftsmanship, and purpose took center stage.
After weeks of design and fabrication, eight architecture and design teams unveiled their transformed pieces, each one a unique interpretation of the original furniture item previously selected. From refined material palettes to unexpected forms, the final designs demonstrated both technical skill and imaginative thinking, highlighting the depth of talent across Houston’s A&D community.
PGAL’s transformation began with an aging corner cabinet in rough condition, reimagined as a refined and functional vanity. Early analysis revealed the cabinet was set at 105 degrees in plan rather than a true 90, leaving valuable corner space underutilized. The team replaced the original thin plywood backing, which had also served as structural support, with a more robust assembly, allowing the piece to be realigned and its footprint maximized.
Material reuse played a central role in the design approach. Rather than discarding removed components, the team repurposed the plywood into a sculpted, wavy feature that introduces movement and visual identity. The cabinet was carefully divided, with portions reused to form the base and an integrated vanity seat, while a new upper structure was introduced to frame the mirror and incorporate salvaged shelving from the original piece.
The final composition balances past and present, preserving key elements of the cabinet while elevating it into a cohesive and intentional new form. The transformation was further supported by project partners, with J. Tyler providing fabrics for the seat cushion and drawer liners, along with casters, furniture legs, and integrated power components, and Daltile contributing LVT cladding between the wavy fins and a stone countertop. Both the fabrics and the countertop were salvaged from construction waste, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability.
The event brought together industry professionals, partners, and supporters for an evening of connection and impact. Each piece was showcased and auctioned, with proceeds directly supporting Houston Furniture Bank and its No Kids Sleep on the Floor initiative. Through this effort, the design community continues to play an active role in providing beds and essential furniture to children and families in need across Greater Houston.
Furniture Flip reflects the power of design beyond the built environment. It is an opportunity to create with intention, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute to a cause that has a tangible and lasting impact on the community.
From concept to completion, this year’s event demonstrated how thoughtful design can transform not only objects, but lives.
