Aldine Mail Route Overpass

The project converted three-quarters of a mile of two-lane roadway into a four-lane boulevard to support regional mobility.

The scope included bridge and roadway design, retaining walls, storm sewer systems, detention ponds, signalization, signage and striping, utility relocations, right-of-way acquisition, railroad coordination, and comprehensive traffic control planning. New bypass frontage roads were incorporated along the Hardy Toll Road to maintain continuous traffic flow during construction.

An alternatives analysis concluded that widening the existing overpass was more efficient than constructing a new twin structure. This approach enabled reuse of parts of the original substructure, minimizing construction cost and complexity.

To accommodate tight turning radii over the tollway and rail corridor, PGAL employed PSTRS14, CAP18, and STAAD software in the structural design. The bridge configuration used slab spans and prestressed beams, eliminating the need for steel framing and preserving two approach spans that would otherwise require full reconstruction.
