Rice University Martel, Jones, + Brown Colleges
Houston, TX
This 192,452-square-foot residential complex expands three Rice University colleges with 337 new beds, classrooms, and commons buildings that strengthen both academic and student life. The development also includes Magister’s Houses, providing on-campus residences for faculty who guide student activities and community traditions.

At Martel College, a circular stair tower connects the new residential wings to the commons, creating a recognizable landmark that anchors the courtyard. The layered architectural expression, with a strong base, middle, and top, is reinforced through exposed concrete framing and a tall port entry.
The Jones College addition links two previously separated buildings, introducing a central stair tower and a new commons. At Brown College, a colonnade of cast-in-place columns and blue glazed clay brick establishes a distinctive entry sequence to the commons.
Each commons building accommodates dining, film, and theater productions, supported by shared kitchen and servery spaces. Living units are designed with abundant natural light and contemporary furnishings, offering a desirable alternative to off-campus housing.
