As part of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s (MWAA) Terminal B/C Redevelopment Program, PGAL served as a lead design firm within the AIR Alliance Joint-Venture team for the New North Concourse, now Concourse E. The 230,000-square-foot, 14-gate concourse replaces the former ground-loaded hardstand operation, greatly improving the passenger experience.

Seating throughout the concourse is diversified to accommodate work, reading, and relaxation, with powered counters available for laptops and devices. Concessions are fully integrated within the gate areas, providing direct access to dining and retail options without leaving sight of boarding gates. Expansive glazing floods the interior with daylight, supports intuitive wayfinding, and frames panoramic views of the nation’s capital.

As a central element of MWAA’s “Project Journey” initiative, Concourse E was designed to reduce overcrowding and elevate service levels across the airport. The design principles established in the new concourse will also guide future upgrades within the existing Terminal B/C concourses to ensure a consistent passenger experience.

As the lead architectural firm on the New North Concourse (Concourse E), PGAL played a critical role in shaping the vision and execution of a modern, world-class concourse that enhances the passenger experience and that is operational efficiency at one of the nation’s busiest airports.
