NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BREAKS GROUND ON PGAL-DESIGNED TERMINAL A REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has broken ground on a $2.4 billion modernization project at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) that includes the redevelopment of Terminal A.

PGAL is serving as prime consultant and lead architect responsible for advanced planning and concept development of the new one million-square-foot terminal building, which will replace the original terminal that opened in 1973. A design-build contract to complete the project will be awarded to one of three shortlisted teams.

The new terminal will include 33 domestic aircraft gates, expanded departures and arrivals curbside frontage, a parking garage complex, and infrastructure improvements. The new terminal will accommodate up to 13.6 million passengers each year, with the flexibility to expand to serve larger aircraft and increased passenger demand in the future.

“This new common use terminal will offer flexibility, operational efficiency and an unparalleled customer experience at one of the most prominent U.S. gateways for travelers and businesses from around the world,” says Ken Brown, President of PGAL. “PGAL is honored to work with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to help reposition the airport for the future.”

Terminal A will provide passengers with curbside check-in as well as a complete range of check-in options in the ticketing lobby, including self-service kiosks with self-tag and self-drop for baggage, staffed full service check-in podiums, and dedicated premium passenger check-in areas.

An expandable security screening checkpoint provides increased passenger queue space and dedicated lanes for premium passengers, crew, and physically challenged travelers. The infrastructure serving check-in and screening operations will adapt to changing and future processing requirements.

The baggage claim area will include six claim units with immediate access to airline services offices and passenger amenities for two defined arrivals areas from the departures concourses. PGAL maximized airline support for ramp operations and consolidated baggage processing and screening areas for efficient outbound and inbound baggage operations.

A broad range of retail and food and beverage options are integrated into the hold room seating areas. Hold rooms are designed to address a diverse aircraft fleet mix that includes wide body aircraft. Airline lounges are immediately accessible after the security checkpoint, and the mezzanine locations offer direct views of the airfield and the primary concourse area.

Terminal A will be supported by a new departures and arrivals roadway system. A 3,000-car parking garage complex will feature a pedestrian bridge and hub connection linking passengers from the garage and Air Train to Terminal A.

The new terminal is expected to be fully operational in 2022.
