Florida Atlantic University MacArthur Campus & Honors College

Jupiter, Florida

Construction Cost:
Completion Date: 1999

This project establishes a location for Florida Atlantic University's Honors College, while serving as a commuter facility for students in the northern Palm Beach region. PGAL is responsible for the campus master plan, infrastructure development and Phase I implementation.

The architectural environment that PGAL created demonstrates this sense of community in its 100,000 square foot campus, by capturing elements of classicism while looking forward to the excitement of education in the future. Columns and grand arches echo historic campus buildings and the wide brick paved pedestrian boulevards are reminiscent of promenades throughout the world. These familiar qualities are countered by the modern amenities, such as metal ceiling panels, that are found throughout the interior of the building.

Six new buildings have been constructed at the campus. These include three classroom and faculty office buildings, a dining facility featuring indoor and outdoor seating, a maintenance building, and a residence hall. The three story residential building houses 125 honors students in four bedroom suites. FAU plans to build three more residence halls, totaling 500 beds. Eventually the facilities at this site will grow to near one million square feet within the next twenty years. The University projects that the new campus will service 4500 students by 2009.

Together, PGAL and FAU are charting new ground in campus architecture. The team's repeated commissions here reflect an exceptional level of creativity and attentiveness to budget and schedule.
