PGAL provided professional services for upgrading UTMB's Radiology Department, with 63,820 SF of renovation space and the addition of 2,585 SF of new construction. The renovation of the Department of Radiology was one of the most intricate remodeling projects on the UTMB campus. It spanned five separate buildings, all of which were originally constructed at different times using a variety of methods. Our assignment involved renovating areas on the second floor of McCullough, Clinical Services, John Sealy Annex, and University Hospital Clinics buildings to provide efficient patient care facilities and infrastructure to accommodate current and future needs. The department remained fully functional throughout construction. Intricate staging was required to keep the department open and operating at an acceptable volume, and we worked closely with the construction manager for this CM@Risk project to ensure these goals were met.
The renovation included consolidation of spaces and new equipment in an updated department consistent with the UTMB mission to provide scholarly teaching, research, and state-of-the-art patient care in a humane environment. It expanded technologies such as MRI, Angiography and Interventional Radiological equipment in support of UTMB's position as one of the nation's outstanding academic health science centers. The consolidation brought together functional groups formerly in separate buildings to increase staff effectiveness and improve access for patients. Great care in the design and coordination of this renovation/addition project was required to make all the new equipment and building systems fit into space allocations, as several buildings being remodeled were as much as 40 years old, with a floor-to-floor height of only 11 feet.
