M.D. Anderson selected PGAL to provide architectural services for the renovation and new construction of additional outpatient and diagnostic clinic facilities. The 10-story addition is connected to the existing facility by the ground floor, and to allow for future links between the two buildings at every floor, the chase area was left completely free of ducts in designated spaces. Additionally, much of the site was left open for landscaping.
While working within the constraints of a difficult site, all design efforts were focused on the absolute convenience of the patients. To create a single entrance for all outpatient facilities, the lobby was enlarged and renovated. Patient walking distances in the new clinic were decreased by placing the reception and waiting areas adjacent to the elevators. All patient areas are near windows to offer ease of orientation and create a brighter atmosphere. Patients awaiting transportation in the lobby area have greater visibility as a result of large expanses of glass.
Since M.D. Anderson is an oncology research center, it was necessary that the facility house state-of-the-art laboratories. Microbiology, lymphology, dental, virology, hematology, immunology, histology, and various other oncology laboratories were included. The main pharmaceutical laboratory for the University of Texas Medical Center was also housed in the facility.
Project totaled 246,000 SF, plus a 12,000 SF transformer vault.
