Palm Beach Community College Humanities Building

Lake Worth, Florida

Construction Cost: $3.25M
Completion Date: 2003

Palm Beach Community College recently selected PGAL to design the renovation of the Humanities Building on their central campus in Lake Worth. Originally constructed in 1963, the 25,000 square foot facility will be completely remodeled in less than one year from the start of design to the completion of construction. Working closely with PBCC and the construction manager, PGAL will employ a variety of techniques including detailed scheduling, advanced purchase of equipment, and early phase documents to complete the project on schedule.

The Humanities Building anchors the southwest corner of the Lake Worth Campus with views to approaching roadways. From a distance, the exterior is a dynamic expression of the arts with features such as the light tower, and sculpture court. Closer, pedestrians can enjoy art displays and the interactive musical fence.

The building houses the core curriculum of the humanities as well as the fine arts administrative suite. The central feature is the versatile main Gallery, a black box display gallery that supports student displays, traveling exhibits, performances, social events and other functions.

Departments within the Humanities Building are the Art Department which includes multi-media classroom suites, painting / drawing studio, art design lab suite, design lab suite, and digital laboratory; the Music Department which includes a variety of practice rooms, band suite, chorus suite, ensemble room, piano lab, multi-media classroom suite and electronic music computer lab; the Architecture Department which includes the studio suite, library, presentation room and cutting and assembling area. The broad range of programs is reflected in the experience that the PGAL team brings to this project including expertise in lighting design, daylight design and acoustics.
