University of Alabama Residence Hall

Birmingham, Alabama

Construction Cost: $17.8M
Completion Date: 2001

PGAL, together with Capstone Development, has created a new Residence Hall for the University of Alabama. The 193,000 square foot building contains 500 student beds, 16 resident advisor suites, a building managers apartment and a host of amenities. The building ranges from five to eight stories, reflecting the topography of the site. This variation in height allows for vertical accents that denote the location of social gathering areas and vertical circulation within the structure. The "L" shaped plan has four bedroom/two bath suits in the long wing and two bedroom/one bath suites in the short wing. Building orientation maximizes prominent street frontage and long-range views. By closing a minor street to the east of the site and providing a parking deck versus all at-grade parking, a new pedestrian quadrangle was created between the new residence hall and an existing hall. The $17.8 million project was completed August 2001.
